We hit 83 million points today! Somehow Eury managed a 2 million point day seriously widening the gap between him and myself while JKMarstetter had a million and half point day taking 3rd putting him within spitting distance of me.

You guys are seriously killing it around these parts - we now have 22 members with more than a million points and we’re in the top 0.5% of all Folding@Home teams! Rusty told me he thought we might be able to break into the top 100 teams and I didn’t think we could pull it off - but barely 1 week into this and we’ve put down more work than 99.5% of the teams in existence. If we keep this up we just might make his dream of top 100 teams possible!

Yeah it’s looking like we’re going to hit that mark. We generated 13 oppoflops tonight so if this pace stays mid-day Tuesday we should hit that mark.

I’m happy to post it - you can’t do all the cheerleading on this one!  Also I’ve been using your posts to go back and track my progress since I’m terrible about doing it myself.

Since there have been a lot of questions I’m going to try to work up a how-to/FAQ post tomorrow on Folding as well see if we can drum up some more interest.

Team Ttyymmnn is about to hit 100,000 points! Woo hoo! Nowhere near the top, but moving steadily upward. I’m running this on an older PC and my Mac, and will fire up my boys’ more powerful machines when they go to bed.

Keep at it! Everything helps and those gaming machines should lay down some serious power. You also can configure theirs to only run on idle so whenever they’re done gaming it’ll fold and it’ll stop folding when they want to game.

Make sure to set that on both the CPU and GPU folding slots though.

Ok so I’ve been kinda out of the loop on this. What kind of hardware do we need to make any sort of impact? Can I use old stuff or would it be a waste? My 2 kids’ computers can’t handle their video classes so I have new ones in the mail and will soon have those free to run 24/7 ... but they are just   2.6 GHz Core 2 Duos. I also have an old 2011 MacBook Air collecting dust that could be used and I’m sure I could set my retina iMac to run at night.

I’d say anything 2n d gen i series or newer can make an impact, but anything older than that (like the core2duo) stuff you’ll just be making noise and heat without being able to do any real number crunching.

Folding is calculating complex scientific models - it’s basically a distributed super computer.

For example I have a machine running an i3-2350m and it generates ~5, 000 points a day, a i7-3632QM making ~16, 000 points a day.

Where the real power come in is GPUs. I have a RX 5700 that generates ~700k points a day and a GTX 1050 that generates ~200k points a day when they can get jobs regularly.

Where is the setting for this? I can’t find it. Also, the last time I ran their machines it didn’t use the GPU. Not sure why.

Right click the blue, purple, yellow, red icon in the taskbar and click ‘Advanced control’ That should pop up this screen.

If you don’t see the two rows under ‘Folding Slots’ and only see the CPU the installer didn’t detect a GPU for some reason.

To add it click ‘Configure’ in the top left of the main window, click the slots tab, and click add in the lower right.  Click the Radio button under GPU and click OK, then Save.  You should see two rows show up under slots and within a couple minutes another row under ‘Work Queue’.  You may need to reboot to get it to download and start working on the GPU.

Right click them under folding slots. There may not have been work units available for the GPUs.

That got the GPU. Thanks. My problem now is that I can’t make it go under my kids’ restricted log in (disclaimer: I am a Mac guy, and Win 10 is rather inscrutable at this point for me). I’d like to have it run on their log in so I can leave it go and not have to log out of my admin account when they want to use the computer. When I log in on their account, I can find everything in the Program Files, but when I try to launch anything I get the little blue circle and nothing happens.

I’m getting ready to hither sack, so I’ll tackle it in the morning. Thanks again.

There’s no comparison on the per watt or total performance of a GPU vs a CPU.

The Ryzen chips put down the best numbers but even still my Ryzen 5 3600 only puts down ~100k points a day while my GTX 1050 puts down over twice that.

I’m hanging on to the #10 spot for Team Oppo, but just barely! I dumped on HP in the past, but this thing has been folding for about 16 hours a day non stop and it dutifully keeps right on going. No hiccups at all!

If anyone is looking for an affordable high performance laptop, Woot.com is where I got mine, and they have a similar make/model available for under 1000$. I know not many people are looking towards college right now, but this would be a great college laptop for someone who wants to game, but also wants a well rounded laptop with good value. Or really a good laptop for anyone looking for those qualities.

Way to go on top-10!  That is a very potent laptop. It should have ample cooling for this as well, I have a Thinkpad that pulls a shift occasionally but it’s thermals aren’t awesome so it doesn’t do it often.

Woot isn’t as awesome as it used to be, but it is still solid for finding deals. It’s more like Amazon’s curated discount warehouse now.

Amazon is so full of junk and scams these days that it’s hard to find legit sellers with a good deal. Woot tends to be a bit better about it, especially now that newegg has become too bloated, even with power searching.

I’m trying to catch up! Possibly going to pull out another system I have that should do 500k PPD, just not sure yet. Eury sure isn’t making it easy to get that top spot, but it seems I am getting WUs more frequently, but not as much as before I switched teams.

Woot ! Go Team Oppo! Sorry, JMiner, I really didn’t think I’d keep the lead, but for some reason the GPUs are getting larger packets with them s eparated than they did in my PC together. Much larger, it more than offset the loss of the RX580. At one point yesterday the 2070 Super was working on a WU worth 400k that took 3hr and the 1080 had 260k that took 2hr.

I’m having computer issues though. For some reason my system won’t recognize anything on USB outside of storage or mice/keyboard since putting the 2070 in. It’s absurd. No steering wheel, no VR, not even an Xbox controller. I have this beast GPU and can only fold or play FPS with it. I’m going to do some More troubleshooting today, but I’ve pretty much exhausted everything.

On a whim I decided to check out new motherboards and CPUs last night since the kid is on my i5 build circa 2011 and would enjoy the 2017 i5-7600k Z290 I’ve got. I’m blown away by what AMD is doing! Back when I was a computer tech in the 90s and early 2000s they made cheap crap but those numbers the Ryzen 7 3700x are putting up are crazy and at a price that kills Intel. I’ve always been an Intel guy but I want the X570 and 3700x setup that Bestbuy has in stock about 10mi away. I’ve got a few more rocks to turn over before I go down that route though. Hopefully I can just get my stuff working right, it’s been an expensive PC week already. I try to do upgrades on a 5yr cycle minimum  and I already broke that with the GPU (henceforth known as the Oppoflop Generstor or OG) at 3yr, plus motherboards are a huge pain in the ass to swap out.

I’ve discovered that I can use the computer for my normal things just fine with F@h running at full steam now that the new GPU is installed.

I meet my classes today using Zoom for the first time. Imagine a Zoom meetup with a bunch of 13-year-olds. I’ll let you know how that goes. We had Zoom church meeting yesterday afternoon. Not a regular worship service, but another meeting and I have to say it was very  nice to see so many people that I care about.

Ttyymmnn brought a pair of GPUs online yesterday. I don’t know what they are, but comparable to the 1060. He’s climbing. Eury is an absolute madman. We might chip in and buy him a tshirt as a reward. I’ll begin working on that this week.

I started to catch up with you on Saturday but yesterday you just started walking away from me! I added another GPU last night in hopes to catch up, but it’s sat mostly idle. Overnight I had my 5700 and my new 5700xt that should be capable of roughly 2 million PPD together do no work...

AMD has seriously been killing it. I’ve been a fan of theirs for years but the last couple they are kicking major intel ass. Their GPUs are also getting a serious upgrade, while they don’t challenge Nvidia at the top end they are in the mid-range.

My desktop sits with F@H running 24/7 and outside of gaming does everything I need it to.  My Plex server does the same, while videos are a little slower to load it keeps chugging along with F@H running.

I talked to him last night about getting the GPUs to show up in the client and it worked.

Eury is just flat out walking away from the rest of us right now. I added a big GPU last night (a RX 5700 XT) but got unlucky and it and my other big GPU sat idle overnight so I didn’t add many points. Hopefull they’ll start to pull some numbers soon.

I’m definitely game for the t-shirt!

What was Ttyymmnn’s issue with the GPUs?

One thing I’ve discovered is that when a GPU job finishes, the fans cut out. I’d tried rebooting and also quitting and restarting the app. I can’t say if it helps, but my GPU has stayed pretty well employed.

They didn’t show up after the client install. I just had him manually add the slots for them and they worked.

Mine had been running pretty occupied mostly I just had a dry spell after I took them down for a few hours to clean them and move around and install new video cards.

I just ordered an Asus Tuf Gaming X570-Plus motherboard and a Ryzen 9 3900X processor. My current motherboard doesn’t support multiple GPUs, so I can’t throw in two. I might be bringing another machine online over the next couple of days to boost me for a bit. Then one the parts come in for my new build I’ll run both in that system.

Are your rear USB ports working at all? If not maybe try resetting the BIOS if you haven’t already. If they do, check your USB header on your board.

I pieced together a t heoretical folding only system. The CPU power is insignificant, it just needs cores to run Nvidia cards, itself and that’s it, so any old chip and board will do. That's the cheap part... The power supply actually has to be decent, and only need a small slow stick of memory. All you need are a pair of gpu cards. So expensive, yes, but if anything is close to a 2060, then grab one. A 1070 is a great card and if it’s $200 used, it’s worth getting. A 1660ti is same output of a 1070 too...

I ended up doing it and pulling the trigger on the (pretty much unneeded) upgrade. MSI X570 mobo, Ryzen 7 3700X and 32gb of 3200mhz RAM. It’s a nice setup. It’s certainly responsive, and it’s noticeable , but not a huge difference vs the i5 7600K that was in here before.

All the ports work, they just didn’t work with VR, the wheel and the Xbox controllers. It’s strange. As it turns out, even with everything new they still don’t work with those things. Pull the 2070 and put in any other card and they all work. I may swap my 2070 Super card for another and see what that does. The card that’s in there has a USB C port on it, but even disabling that port doesn’t fix the issue.

That is very nice - those 3700x are monster processors.

I took down my stuff for an upgrade last night, added a RX 5700 XT to my desktop and moved the RX 3700 into my plex server so I’ve got it and a GTX 1050 in the same box plugging away. They only pulled tiny jobs for the first while but this afternoon they finally started pulling serious jobs, if everything runs jobs all the time should bump me to 2.5 million PPD.

For now I should gain some points back towards you.

That’s weird, I haven’t seen something like that cause an issue, I wonder if it’s windows having the issue or an actual hardware problem.
